WATERING INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION

Proper watering of your lawn is very crucial to its overall health and growth. Your lawn needs at least 1”-1 1⁄2 “ of water per week. You want to make sure you are watering deeply 2-3 times per week, not daily. Watering daily will give your grass a shallow root system which tends to dry out fast and will weaken the lawn.

Watering deeply 3 times a week or every other day will give your lawn a deep root system, making it stronger and more drought-resistant.

THE BEST TIME TO WATER

Water as early in the morning as you can, when possible. Watering in the early morning will make certain your lawn dries before the night. If a lawn contines to be wet over night on a regular basis it can lead to fungus and disease problems.

Watering in the early morning usually means its cooler and less windy so you have less evaporation. If you cannot always water in the early morning remember that watering anytime is better than not watering at all.

WATERING IN THE HEAT

You may need to water more in the summer heat to keep your lawn from becoming stressed from drought, especially if those high temp days are accompanied with high winds. On days with extremely high temps water lightly daily to cool off the grass. Daily waterings in the heat should be an addition to your regular deep waterings, not a alternative.

RAISING MOWING HEIGHT

It can get pretty warm in northeast Ohio and on days where we have really high temperatures – 90’s and above – for multiple days in the forecast you may want to raise your mowing height. Keeping grass longer in the summer helps shade the soil, keeping it cool and reducing the stress from the summer heat. Remember, if temps rise, so should your mower blade.

SIGNS YOU’RE NOT GETTING ENOUGH WATER

When lawns aren’t getting enough water, you’ll often notice the following symptoms:

  • The color changes from a vibrant green to a much duller blue-green and later brown.
  • Lawns appears to be dead or dying.

SIGNS YOU MAY BE OVERWATERING.

  • Fungus growth
  • Weed growth
  • Standing water – when watering, never add so much water that it sits on the top of the soil.
  • Yellowing or Discoloration – this is caused by water stripping away too many of the nutrients in the soil.
